The Arlington Eagles' 2-mile relay team opened the 1983 season March 26 at the Fremont Bergan Indoor Invitational.
Shawn Fuhrer, Dan Toebben, Mark Grefe and Chris Gawert set an indoor school record, finishing the race in 9 minutes, 4 seconds as the Eagles took third overall. They finished behind first-place Elkhorn and the host Bergan Knights.
AHS' Dave Suhr added a second-place finish in the shot put, while Michael Bellander (800-meter run) and Gawert (440 dash) also claimed individual silver medals, too.
“I was pleased with our efforts in most cases,” coach Dave Ziola told the Arlington Citizen after the event. “We still have a long ways to go, but I can see improvement.”
The 2-mile relay team went onto set the Arlington school outdoor record in 1983, too, though no Eagles qualified for or competed at the state meet.
