Elementary school basketball players take part in AHS camps

After a quick snack, Arlington High School basketball coaches split a large group of youngsters into two camp groups Thursday afternoon — boys and girls.
The girls remained seated in the new gym, while the boys rushed to go to old one.
AHS assistant coach Leslie Gubbels had to stop the movers before they reached the hallway. She said she appreciated the boys' enthusiasm, but also reminded them to walk to avoid running each other over.
“It's overwhelming, but it's a thrill to have the numbers and to see the excitement kids have for basketball,” high school boys coach Tyler Spitser said.
Arlington coaches — and their high school volunteers — hosted two basketball camps in recent weeks. About 75 players in grades 4-6 took part in the session that ended Nov. 5, while about 125 more took part in the other that closed Thursday, according to Spitser.
“Our main goal is to get kids excited (about basketball),” he said.
The numbers reflected excitement as did the hustle in the gyms — and the moves from one to the other. In the new gym Thursday, Eagle boys basketball players helped youngsters through passing, dribbling and defensive drills. In the old gym, girls basketball players helped young boys and girls on their shooting skills.
Those same high school Arlington players start their own practices Monday.
