The 2022 Cornhusker State Games officially began today with competition set to continue through July 24.
The Sportfest Athlete Meal begins at 4:30 p.m. today at Lincoln East High School before the the Games' Opening Ceremonies at 8 p.m. on Seacrest Field. The ceremony will include opening remarks, a parade of athletes, the National Anthem, axe-throwing, skydivers, a freestyle motocross exhibition and the torch lighting. Everything will be followed by fireworks.
“The purpose of the Games is to provide top-quality amateur competition in a wide range of activities,” according to the annual event's website.
More than 70 sites in Lincoln, Omaha and the surrounding communities will host sporting events. The Fremont Family YMCA was one of multiple locations to host an early event on July 8, too.
Traditional Olympic sports will take place, but so, too, will horseshoes and chess.
Washington County athletes from Blair, Arlington, Fort Calhoun, Kennard and Herman are expected to compete and are listed as 2022 participants. Results will appear in a future Enterprise Media Group publication.
