Basketball teams contend for holiday tourney title

The Arlington girls basketball team beat Fort Calhoun 61-40 during the Pioneers' 1988 Holiday Shootout, knocking the hosts from the unbeaten ranks.
The Class B No. 7 Eagles led 6-0 FCHS 16-4 through one quarter and never gave back the lead.
“We caused a lot of turnovers, which helped us,” AHS coach Joleen Brown told Enterprise Media Group. “We set the tempo of the game and ran what we wanted to run.”
The Pioneers committed 40 turnovers, while Arlington had just 12.
Carma Greunke led the Eagles with 12 points, too, while Shelli Graver had a team-best six rebounds. Lori Gottsch notched four assists and six steals.
Fort Calhoun's Shaune Errett led her team with 12 points in defeat. Christy Vacek totaled 10 points as well.
