3 Bears selected to all-star softball game
Blair High School seniors Leah Chance, Nessa McMillen and Kalli Ulven were recently announced as participants in the 19th Nebraska Coaches Association (NCA) All-Star Softball Game.
The event is 6 p.m. July 22, 2024, at the Nebraska Cornhuskers' Bowlin Field. McMillen signed to play college softball with Nebraska in November, while Chance and Ulven will compete for Wayne State College and the University of Nebraska-Kearney, respectively.
The three Bears may play for or against Arlington High School coach Janelle Lorsch, who will lead the Red team during the softball all-star matchup.
Last summer, BHS coach Jennifer Fangmeier served as an assistant coach in the NCA contest, while 2023 Blair graduate Tessa Villotta participated.
OWH names all-state volleyball honorees
The Omaha World-Herald recently announced its All-Nebraska and All-State volleyball honorees. Among the honorable mention recipients were nine Washington County players.
Blair High School's Class B honorees were juniors Taylor Mostek, Nicki Wendt and Hailey Roewert as well as senior Peyton Ogle. Mostek led the Bears in kills and aces this season, while Roewert produced the most assists and Ogle led the team in blocks.
Fort Calhoun's Mollie Dierks, Raegen Wells and Emilee Thayer-Mencke earned Class C honorable mention from the statewide publication, too. Wells, a senior, led the Pioneers in kills, while Dierks topped the team in digs.
Thayer-Mencke, meanwhile, made an impact as a freshman with 125 kills and 27 blocks.
Arlington's Austyn Flesner and Callee Shearer were recognized by the OWH, too. Flesner led the Eagles in assists, while Shearer notched a team-best 258 digs.
Armadillos start hoops season 1-0
The Arlington Armadillos are 1-0 through the first week of the new Farmland Basketball League season.
Team manager Zach Helms' men's squad beat the North Bend Ambush on Sunday, 75-51. While he had six points, Jackson Borgmann notched a game-high 17 for the Armadillos. Brant Hilzendeger added 11 points, and Joshua Hilgenkamp and Zach Fitz had nine apiece.
Arlington's Clint Belina (five points), Jake Lenaeus (six), TJ Stosich (five), Skyler Andrews (five) and Ben Fullner (two) also scored in the opener. Their team next competes 6 p.m. Sunday at Howells, which fell 62-50 to Wisner in the opener.
