The countdown to the Washington County Fair has officially begun, and the days are going fast. Families are building projects, working with animals or maybe perfecting grandma’s chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Before families can exhibit at the 2021 Washington County Contest Day or exhibit animal projects at the fair, 4-Hers must complete Google Form pre-entries. Pre-entries allow the 4-H staff to know what is coming to the fair and ensure with the partnership of the Washington County Fair Board, we have enough pen space and facilities that are all set before the big show.
The county fair is a way for youth to showcase all the hard work and newly gained knowledge they have learned over the past year. Numerous life skills can be taken away from all project areas, even if it is a child’s first year or ninth year. Many projects have different advancement levels to encourage youth to expand each year a project is exhibited. Still, others allow youth to be creative to build new projects within the same curriculum area. The whole family is encouraged to help youth with projects to create long-lasting memories and increase youth’s sense of belonging and development of relationships.
Building trusting relationships with adults is essential for youth’s social and emotional development. Starting within your family dynamic will reflect how youth will build relationships for the rest of their lives. 4-H can become the gateway bridge for positive youth development; the first step is saying “yes.”
