High school golf coaches Dustin Humphrey and Landon Walkenhorst lamented the wind April 3 after their teams competed during the Douglas County West Invitational.
“Never could get anything going,” said Walkenhorst, the Arlington Eagles' coach. “Brutal conditions for the first meet.”
Humphrey, the Fort Calhoun Pioneers' coach, said his team struggled in its first tournament of the spring.
“Wind wasn't helpful, of course,” he explained.
The Eagles finished with 437 strokes across 18 holes at The Pines in Valley, while the Pioneers carded 457.
Bennington, however, finished with just 337 to win the tournament. Elkhorn Mount Michael tallied 352 for second and Wahoo notched 364 for third, too.
Altogether, AHS' Jacob Meehan produced Washington County's top score. He finished with 96 swings, which was 17 more than first-place Lawson Scheppers of Mount Michael and seven outside of top-15 medal contention.
Josh Hamre added 102 strokes for the Eagles, while Tyler Anthofer (112), Ben Stork (127) and Hunter Wallace (130) rounded out Coach Walkenhorst's lineup.
Owen Miller, meanwhile, carded FCHS' top round. He finished with 109 swings, while Jayden Miller had 112, and both Beau Ruma and Adam Elofson tallied 118. Caden Newman recorded 119 strokes, too.
Both Arlington and Fort Calhoun next compete Wednesday at Ashland Golf Club for Ashland-Greenwood's home tourney. The first varsity golfers tee off at 9 a.m.
FCHS will also have golfers in Leigh on Wednesday. They will tee off at 9, too.
