Arlington High School seniors Josh Hamre and Jacob Beans scored touchdowns in their final football game Friday, but the No. 7 Douglas County Falcons earned the home win going into the Class C1 playoffs.
The Eagles, meanwhile, dropped to 1-8 with the 46-12 defeat. The loss ended the prep football careers of all of coach Colter Mattson's 12th-graders.
“Those guys have done things the right way,” he said. “They led by example in the weight room and other off-season experiences. They are truly a great group of young men that will continue to be talked about.”
DC West held a 7-0 lead through one quarter before breaking open the game with a 25-point second. Altogether, the Falcons scored five first-half rushing touchdowns with lead back Brady Singer notching two, including a 40-yarder during the second quarter.
The home team pushed ahead 39-0 before AHS scored its first points during the third. Hamre hauled in an 8-yard pass from quarterback Cooper Staats, pulling the Eagles within 33 points.
DC West answered with one more touchdown in the fourth before Beans scored Arlington's last points of the season on a 3-yard run. He ran for 48 yards in defeat, while senior Kaden Foust carried the ball 16 times for 50 yards.
Staats, meanwhile, was 7-for-13 for 32 yards and a score in the passing game. Hamre had two catches for 22 yards, while Kieryn Grothe had two for 5 yards and Trent Koger had one for 6.
The Eagles won their first game of the season Aug. 25 against Raymond Central, 27-21, but lost their next eight during the fall campaign. Despite its struggles, Mattson said Arlington built for the future during the season, gaining experience and leadership skills through valuable development time on the field.
“This year we were able to build depth and get a lot of kids reps,” the coach said. “Those reps will pay off from both levels of play on the varsity and (junior varsity) side.”
