Shot put and discus won Arlington High School senior Taylor Arp over.
“After my freshman year, I really started to like it and felt like, 'Oh, maybe one day I'll be good enough to go somewhere,'” she explained.
Sure enough, the two-time state qualifier proved herself and signed with the Wayne State College track and field team last week. Arp celebrated the signing Tuesday at AHS, too.
The Eagles' standout visited Wayne in September and quickly made the decision to commit.
“About a week and a half later, I texted (coach Carly Fehringer) and told her I planned on going to Wayne,” Arp said.
She was motivated by last season's personal record throw in the discus — 130 feet, 4 inches — and the consistency that followed. It convinced her to keep going.
“It really made me realize it's something I want to continue doing,” Arp said.
The Arlington senior played volleyball in the fall and next competes in basketball, but she will contend for a third state meet berth this May after claiming 10th in the discus earlier this year. Next spring, she wants to work on her shot put rotation technique and also work toward the Nebraska Capitol Conference record in discus.
When that's all done, though, Arp plans to study elementary education and compete as a Wildcat in college. She may join Hailey Baker, a current junior Wayne State thrower from Blair, too.
