The Arlington girls basketball team held Wisner-Pilger to 34 points Thursday, securing a 50-34 home win.
Senior Taylor Arp said her Eagles (8-1 overall) started in their man-to-man defense, but played their best in a 2-3 zone.
“We're a really good zone team if we just keep our hands up,” she said. “I think we do a good job of that.”
It led to Gator turnovers and a 26-15 halftime lead for AHS. Sophomore Macy Wolf ended the half with a made baseline floater.
Wisner scored a 3-pointer just before the buzzer at the end of the third period, too, but the Eagles still led by 11 points. Coach Tashia Wolf's team then pushed its margin of victory to 14 with a 16-point fourth quarter. It led by as many 22 points.
Overall, Britt Nielsen led Arlington with 19 points. The junior made many of her buckets from within 5 feet.
“Usually, the day before a game, we talk about what kind of defense they run and we work on offenses we think will work based on what we see on film,” Arp said.
As a result of their practice efforts, the Eagles scored multiple baskets at the rim Thursday, making passes from the high post to the low post for easy attempts.
“We just work on that high-low, quick overhead pass or quick bounce pass and just work on catching it on the fly like that,” Arp said.
Guard Emme Timm added 10 points against the Gators, sinking two shots from beyond the 3-point line. Wolf scored 10, too, but with five 2s.
Austyn Flesner notched six points for Arlington as well and Arp had five. The victory was their team's eighth in nine tries before the holiday break.
“Very confident with where we are right now,” Arp said. “I think we're ready to go into the holiday tournament and play really good basketball.”
AHS competes at Lincoln Lutheran on Friday during the Warriors' home tourney. The first-round game tips off at 4:30 p.m.
