It’s been another banner week for Washington County high school athletes.
My Nannen & Harte Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week decisions continue to be difficult, but I’m happy to pick these three standouts — Austyn Flesner, Anna Taylor and Ben Holcomb.
As is my new tradition, I’ll note my honorable mentions in the official recipients’ descriptions.
Austyn Flesner, Arlington volleyball: The senior continues to work into her new position on the court this fall with winning results on Saturday against Twin River. She tallied 14 assists across just two sets in the Eagles’ second victory of the season. Special mention goes to AHS softball player Rylee Fuehrer, who finished with two RBIs and a pitching win last Thursday against West Point GACC.
Anna Taylor, Fort Calhoun softball: The Pioneer finished the week with two homers and 14 strikeouts from the pitching circle. Her team won a tournament in Nebraska City on Saturday, too. Special mention goes to Anna’s teammates Kaitlyn Welchert (three homers this week), Addie Benoit (one homer) and Tacey Belina (a five-RBI game).
Ben Holcomb, Blair football: Admittedly, this was a real tough decision between the senior, who had six tackles and two sacks, and his squad’s workhorse running back — Brock Templar. While the back ran for more than 200 yards, I felt Holcomb made, arguably, two of the most important plays of the Bears’ win at Omaha Gross. He applied the initial pressure on Braden McGill’s tackle for a safety and returned the ensuing kickoff back 67 yards for a touchdown. The plays flipped a 7-0 deficit into a 9-7 lead in a matter of seconds.
Congratulations to all mentioned, and thanks for reading.
