The Fort Calhoun volleyball team ended its second trip to Malcolm in three days with a 5-5 overall record.
Coach Liz Sevcik's Pioneers went 2-3 during the Clippers' two-day tournament, capping the event with a three-set victory Saturday against Centennial.
“Raegen (Wells) and Ruby (Garmong) came through with a couple of great serving streaks for us to help get the win in the third set,” she said.
Prior to the 27-25, 9-25 and 25-23 win, FCHS was 0-for-2 on the day. It lost a 25-9, 25-5 match to Class C2 No. 1 Lincoln Lutheran before a three-set loss to Milford.
Two days earlier, the Pioneers split a two-match night on the first day of the Malcolm tourney. They bested Louisville 2-0 Thursday after Columbus Scotus earned a 25-8, 25-14 win against coach Sevcik's squad.
FCHS won the first set with the Lions 25-21 before claiming the second by three, 25-22. The win was the Pioneers' fourth of the season, matching its 2021 total. It surpassed that season-long total two days later against Centennial.
School record: Coaches didn't realize it as it happened, but Fort Calhoun senior setter Olivia Quinlan set a school record Sept. 6 against Omaha Brownell-Talbot. The Pioneer set a single-match mark for service aces with 12 during the 3-2, five-set victory. The previous record of 11 was set by Nancy Peitzmeier in 2002.

Blair goes 1-3 at Norris
The Blair volleyball team won the first set of its Norris Invite fifth-place match Saturday afternoon.
“Played super well, and it was one of the best sets I have seen them play,” Bears assistant coach Jess Lansman said.
Platteview came back, though, winning the second and third sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-14. It took fifth with the three-set victory, while BHS (4-8 overall) finished sixth with a 1-3 tournament record.
The Bears swept Ralston 2-0 Saturday, but it lost to Crete (25-11, 25-20) and Seward (25-21, 25-14). Still, Lansman was pleased with Blair's showing.
“Overall, I am really proud of their effort today. They worked extremely hard,” she said. “We had a tough pool and had to play three games back-to-back, which is hard for anyone to do. We learned a lot today about our team and will continue to get better from these tough matches.”
To beat Ralston, the Bears first won the first set 25-13 on Ellia Klanderud's kill. They then came back from 21-15 down to topple the Rams 26-24 in the second. Schuyler Roewert tapped the ball over a block attempt for the 25th point before Klanderud served an ace off of the top of the net to end it.
On Thursday, though, the Bears played a best-of-5 Eastern Midlands Conference match at Elkhorn, falling 3-0. BHS played a tight, 25-23 second set, but lost the first and third by scores of 25-14 and 25-10, respectively.
Blair next competes 6:30 p.m. tonight at Elkhorn North.
