The Arlington softball team took control of Tuesday's home opener with a six-run second inning.
Paige Kraemer's bases-loaded walk scored teammate Julia Landauer, Cadie Robinson hit a 2-RBI single and junior slugger Hannah Stahlecker smashed a no-doubt, 3-run homer over the left field fence as the Class C No. 7 Eagles beat Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, 10-3.
“I have no idea,” Stahlecker said when asked how far she thought her home run ball flew. “I didn't look at it.”
In the end, Hailey Brenn picked up the pitching win as AHS improved to 3-1 this season. The Raiders fell to 2-1 in defeat.
The Eagles started their first 2021 game at Two Rivers Sports Complex with a two-run bottom half of the first frame. The first and second of Stahlecker's five RBIs came on a single swing that scored both Kiersten Taylor and Robinson.
Later, during the fourth and fifth innings, Arlington's Sydney Magnino and Gracie Herman tallied RBIs, too. It was the Eagles' defense, however, that highlighted the later stages of the home opener.
First, in the fourth frame, Kraemer caught a fly ball in right field and alertly threw it into Landauer at first base for an inning-ending double play. Two innings later, a Logan View knock sailed over Kraemer's head before she picked it up and threw it in to her cut-off, freshman infielder Britt Nielsen.
“I saw (the Raider) rounding two and Brit had the ball,” Stahlecker said. “And I was like, 'It's right here.'”
Nielsen zipped a throw to the home-run hitter at third base and she applied the tag in time.
“Perfect throw,” Stahlecker said.
AHS played in Omaha against Omaha Duchesne on Thursday and next plays Saturday during the West Point Guardian Angels CC tournament. The Eagles are back at home Tuesday against Ashland-Greenwood.
