The Arlington High School football team fell to 0-8 Friday with a 56-13 loss to the Class C1 No. 8 Columbus Lakeview Vikings.
Lakeview improved to 6-2 with the home win, scoring 21 points during both the first and second quarters to jump out to a 42-7 halftime lead. At one point, though, the Eagles tied the game with the Vikings, 7-7.
“On that drive, we executed very well,” AHS coach Colter Mattson said, citing a sizable pass completion from quarterback Cooper Staats to Jacob Beans, which set up the score. Kaden Pittman, however, earned the touchdown, catching another one of Staats' throws.
“Ultimately, our guys put together a clean drive,” Mattson said.
Colton Willmott added the extra point kick, evening the score for Arlington before Lakeview scored twice more in the opening quarter. The Eagles later found the end zone again in the fourth when Beans finished off a run across the goal line.
Next, AHS will play its season finale 7 p.m. Friday against Douglas County West. The final home game will come at the end of another week of preparation — the Eagles' last of 2022.
“We will continue to emphasize just competing, confidence and execution,” Mattson said of his practice plans prior to the Arlington's matchup with the Falcons (4-4 overall). “That was an emphasis this week and it showed. Although the score may not have shown it, the guys executed this week.”
Despite their record, the Eagles have prepared hard going into each game this fall.
“They have continued to bring effort and energy to practice this whole season, and that comes from our leadership,” the coach said. “Those will continue to be what we emphasize.”
