No. 1 Wahoo topples Arlington softball, 9-0

Warrior's pitcher hits 3 homers

Autumn Iversen and her Wahoo softball team offered evidence to support their Class B No. 1 ranking Tuesday at the Two Rivers Sports Complex.
The standout senior pitched a five-inning shutout and hit three homers as the Warriors (24-1 overall) beat Arlington by run-rule, 9-0. The loss dropped the Class C Eagles' season record to 11-11.
“They can (hit). They absolutely can,” AHS coach Janelle Lorsch said of Wahoo. “They can do it from top-to-bottom. And when one of them doesn't, the other one turns around and picks them up and gets them going back again.”
Iversen led off the game with a solo shot that bounced off of the top of the scoreboard beyond the left field fence. Eagles pitcher Rylee Fuehrer bounced back from there, though, earning three outs against the next four batters. She induced two flyouts and a groundout before striking out her first Warrior during the scoreless top of the second inning.
“You know, she adjusted,” Lorsch said of her junior right-hander. “And you have to with a team like that.”
Wahoo went onto score five runs during the third frame, though, seizing firm control of the matchup. It added one during the fourth inning and two on Iversen's third homer in the fifth to win by run-rule.
Arlington, meanwhile, produced four base runners in total against the Warriors. Sydney Magnino reached on a dropped third strike in the second inning before Britt Nielsen and Kiersten Taylor notched a pair of singles up the middle of the infield during the third.
Nielsen put the ball in play again during the fifth inning, but it was too little to earn a run against Class B's top-ranked team.
Though they lost Tuesday, Lorsch has been encouraged by the Eagles' recent play after a 1-5 stretch prior to last Saturday's 2-1 Nebraska Capitol Conference Tournament effort.
“Oh my, yes,” she said.
The coach even believes the loss to Wahoo can serve as a lesson with next Monday's Class C-2 Subdistrict Tournament quickly approaching.
“If anything tonight, I hope (the Eagles) looked out across the field and saw a player that they can imitate,” Lorsch said.
