Monke wins 100-mile ultramarathon

Adam Monke's running career hit another peak Labor Day weekend.
The 35-year-old Nickerson man, an Arlington High School graduate, started the 100-mile Booneville Backroads Ultramarathon at 5 a.m. Sept. 3 and completed it 19 hours, 5 minutes and 17 seconds later for the win. He was more than an hour ahead of the second-place runner — Ryan Kramer of West Des Moines, Iowa.
The Madison County, Iowa, endurance race started at Badger Creek State Recreation Area. Monke's four sons then helped him get to the end, providing aid a long the course. They helped fill water bottles and readied food to hand off to their father.
Monke has an extensive running career. In 2021, he finished the invite-only Badwater 135, a 135-mile foot race from Badwater Basin in Death Valley, Calif., to the Whitney Portal in Inyo County, 12th.
