Leslie 'Gene' Labs, 70

Leslie "Gene" E. Labs, age 70, of Herman, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021, at his home.

Leslie was born on Jan. 3, 1951, to Melvin and Doris Labs in Omaha. He attended and graduated from Benson High School. Following high school, he joined the United States Navy serving as a first class petty officer for six years before being honorably discharged in 1977.

Gene was united in marriage to Barbara Coburn on May 1, 1971 at Calvary Lutheran Church. In 1984, Gene and Barb moved to Blair, where Gene worked for the OPPD Nuclear Power Plant until retirement. He continued working part time as a nuclear operations consultant. In 2000, they moved to their home outside of Herman.

Gene belonged to St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served as an elder. He was a lifetime VFW member at Legion Post 1 in Omaha. Gene loved Husker football, NASCAR, camping, his church and above all his family and granddaughters.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Labs, Kenneth Labs, sister Karen Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Barb, sons Michael Labs, David (Dawn) Labs, granddaughters Alexis and Theona Labs, and his beloved dog Sammy, sisters Barb (Ron) Scheer, Kathleen (Carey) Labs, sister-in-laws Sara Labs, Trudy (Keith) Stillman, brother-in-law Nick (Patty) Coburn, as well as many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Visitation was held Thursday at the Dugan Funeral Chapel. Funeral Services will be held Friday, Feb. 5, 2021, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 11 a.m.. Burial will take place a St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Military honors by VFW Post 8332, American Legion Post 71.
