Arlington High School senior quarterback Josh Miller had high expectations for Friday's Powder Puff football game.
“This is going to be the greatest football you've ever seen,” he said.
The sophomore class fundraiser didn't go the QB's team's way, however. His Class of 2021 girls fell to the juniors, 32-12.
“I think we practiced a little more,” junior team quarterback Kate Miller said. “But (the seniors) did really good. It was fun.”
The juniors started fast, scoring on a pass from Miller to Kailynn Gubbels in the first quarter of the flag football game.
“We were real excited,” the QB said. “This was our first time.”
The Class of 2020 would build its lead to 20-0 with two more touchdowns during the second quarter. Chase Andersen took an end-around pitch and then threw a scoring pass to Miller for a 12-0 lead. Gubbels' two-point conversion pushed the advantage to 14-0.
Then, with just 12.5 seconds left before halftime, Gubbels threw a touchdown pass to Stella Lewis.
“We just all love sports, so it was just another sport we could play,” Miller said of the juniors' enthusiasm.
Gubbels added a third-quarter touchdown run and a fourth-quarter interception return for a score to push her team's lead to 32-0. On the interception, she ripped the ball just out of the grasp of senior Kali Thomsen before running it all the way back to the opposite end zone.
The Arlington seniors wouldn't go scoreless, however. Lily Stonehocker notched a long touchdown run down the north sideline before Mallory Ruwe notched her own interception return for a touchdown.
When asked if the two scores made up for the loss, Thomsen said, “no!” Cracking a smile, she laughed it off.
“I was just having fun, that's it,” Thomsen said. “That's all it was about.”
