Correction: The Enterprise incorrectly noted a school backstroke record in the original version of this article. It now correctly notes, however, a 500-yard freestyle record set by Ryleigh Schroeter.
The Heartland Athletic Conference's swimming and diving championships are contested across three days in two locations.
After dives in Lincoln, two rounds of swims were contested in the Dillon Family Aquatics Center pool — the home pool of the Fremont Tigers. In it, FHS — and its Washington County athletes — took fourth in the boys' standings and fifth in girls' competition.
“Very proud staff,” coach David Struble stated in his post-meet recap. “We had so many amazing swims from the whole team in both prelims and finals.”
While Elliot Vech secured two school records and Fremont's first HAC boys event win in several years, Blair High School senior Jane Busboom earned second in the 100-yard backstroke event. She stopped the clock in 58.34 seconds. The future St. Thomas (Minn.) college swimmer was second in the 50 freestyle, too.
Another Blair senior, Ryleigh Schroeter, took second in the 500 freestyle with a new school record time of 5:18.34. She was fourth in 200 freestyle as well.
Jacob Hanson of BHS was second and sixth in the 50 and 100 free, respectively. His 50-yard, runner-up time was 22.31 seconds, while Kennedy Zehner's fourth-place time in the 100 breaststroke was 1:09.36. The Bears — as well as Busboom and Schroeter — were apart of multiple second-place relay finishes with their Fremont teammates as well.
Blair's Hannah Huenink added a sixth-place relay finish across 400 yards for her best finish, too, while Arlington senior Dathan Hansen helped his 200 free relay squad with Hanson, Zayne Keslar and Micah Moore take third.
AHS' Eli Hansen was ninth in HAC boys diving, while BHS' Mason Lau's best finish was 16th in the 100 backstroke.
LeLah Filows of Blair participated during preliminary swims on Friday, too.
Fremont next competes Feb. 27 through March 1 at the NSAA State Swimming & Diving Championships in Lincoln.
