Eagles track wins 10 events at Logan View, FCHS 1

Arlington's Gubbels, Green sweep events

Winning may or may not be contagious, but it certainly is influential.
“It's super motivating,” Arlington track standout Nolan May said Tuesday at Logan View High School. The Eagle girls have won multiple meets this season, while the boys have added event wins themselves. “We have so many good senior leaders that are keeping us going. Pushing us hard.”
But, as the Logan View Invitational proved, AHS has more than just its 12th-graders.
“And, I think, we have a good group of underclassmen that are stepping up, too,” said May, a sophomore.
Coach Steven Gubbels' team won eight individual events and two relays Tuesday, earning second in the girls' standings and fourth on the boys' side.
Fort Calhoun's Angel Nelson, meanwhile, earned her team's event win at Logan View, leading the Pioneer girls to a sixth-place finish.
The FCHS boys were seventh during the eight-team invite. Wahoo Neumann swept the team titles overall, however, finishing with a combined 259 team points.

Green, Gubbels lead Eagles
Consistent first-place finishers Kailynn Gubbels and Keelianne Green dominated for Arlington again Tuesday. Both Eagles finished first in every Logan View event they competed in.
Green set a new school record in the 800-meter run, finishing it in 2:19.17. The junior cross-country champ also won the triple jump, clearing 37 feet, 0.75 inches before joining up with Chase Andersen, Gubbels and Kiersten Taylor to win the 1,600 relay in 4:11.5.
Gubbels, meanwhile, won the two events she has state championships in — the high jump and 100 hurdles. The senior Iowa State recruit cleared 5-7 and stopped the clock in 14.87 seconds.
Hailey O'Daniel also earned an event win for the AHS girls, claiming top honors in the 1,600. She finished in just 5:54.66.
The Arlington boys won three individual events and a relay, too. May finished his first 2-mile of the season in 10:45.34 to earn gold.
“Today I knew, especially with how windy it was and with (Fort Calhoun's Lance) Olberding up there with me, I had to ride him and save my energy,” the distance runner said. “Save it for the second mile, mainly.”
Senior Colby Grefe ran a mile less than May, but won as well. He clocked in at 4:52.32 before teaming up with May, William Eppenbaugh and Kaden Foust to win the 1,600 relay.
Foust also earned first in the individual 200-meter dash, clocking in at 23.49 seconds.

Nelson earns FCHS event win
Nelson highlighted Fort Calhoun's effort Tuesday on the Raiders' track — and long jump runway. The Pioneer covered 16 feet, 3 inches, besting second-place Mary Chvatal of Wahoo Neumann by 0.25 of an inch.
In addition to Nelson's win, three FCHS athletes earned second-place results. Olberding, a junior, finished just behind the Eagles' May in the 3,200-meter run, clocking in at 11:08.28. The Pioneers' Travis Skelton and Eddie Lautrup earned fifth and eighth, respectively, in the long-distance event.
Bria Bench, meanwhile, was second in the girls' 3,200 run. She clocked in at 13:22.04.
Grayson Bouwman's 400 dash time was 56.9 seconds. It was worth a silver medal as well.
Dala Drowne (100 dash, 400 relay), Kaylee Taylor (triple jump, 400 relay), Bench (high jump), Clayton Bohnenkamp (400 relay), Bouwman (400 relay), Michael Maxon (400 relay), Ethan Granger (400 relay), Tess Skelton (400 relay) and Nelson (400 relay) contributed to Fort Calhoun third-place efforts, too.
