The son of a former college player, Arlington senior Isaac Foust started putting on pads and playing tackle football during the third grade.
His father coached as he worked his way up, readying himself for a four-year run as an AHS Eagle.
“At the beginning of my high school career, I was always, like, the bigger kid,” Foust said. “And then I stopped growing.”
Well under 6-feet tall, the senior adapted, using his elusiveness and quickness to become a team leader for Arlington head coach Colter Mattson.
“I'm very confident of my abilities on the field,” Foust said last Wednesday. “I think I can bring a lot of good things to Dakota Wesleyan.”
The soon-to-be high school graduate signed with the Mitchell, S.D., school earlier this year and celebrated the fact last week and AHS. He is one of 35 members of the Tigers' 2022 recruiting class, including one of five Nebraskans. The others are Dillon Barnes of Norfolk, Jacob Chvatal of Omaha, Michael Hart of Elkhorn and Fremont's Jake Hedges.
Wesleyan coaches first reached out to Foust a year ago, telling him he'd be a “great fit.” The Eagle finished his prep career with 140 tackles, including 43 tackles last fall. He also recorded a sack, an interception and a fumble recovery during his 12th-grade campaign.
Offensively, Foust scored five career rushing touchdowns. He had 160 yards of offense last fall.
The AHS standout visited Mitchell during a Tigers game — a win — and determined the school would be a fit academically. He returned for a signing party in recent months, meeting with his future teammates and accepting applause from the basketball team's crowd.
“It was really nice hearing all of the support from the fans,” Foust said. “They don't know who we are, but they know we'll help the team in the future.”
The senior's Arlington classmate, Barrett Nielsen, signed to compete in track and field at DWU last fall, too.
