Ashland-Greenwood's two-point road lead didn't stick.
The Arlington girls basketball team went on an 11-0 run to start the fourth period Tuesday, earning a 46-40 Nebraska Capitol Conference Tournament victory by the end of it. Coach Luke Brenn's Eagles advanced onto the semifinals at 7-7 overall, while the Bluejays' season record dipped to 5-10.
“I feel like we came out hot as a team,” freshman AHS guard Emme Timm said. “It was just that sense of we really wanted to take over.”
“In the huddle before the fourth quarter, we were just ready to go,” sophomore Britt Nielsen added.
Timm's bucket to open the final 8 minutes tied the game at 30-all before junior Taylor Arp scored at the end of a fast break for a 32-30 lead. The forward added two free throws before Nielsen's own drive to the basket ended in a six-point advantage.
The Eagles' Macy Wolf finally capped the scoring streak with her second make from beyond the 3-point arc. Her team held a 39-30 lead at that point.
“We were all on the same page and I think that's what really helped us,” Timm said.
Ashland-Greenwood finally scored a fourth-period basket with its own 3-point make, but Arlington answered. Driving to the basket, Timm fired a sharp bounce pass down the lane to sophomore Libby Hegemann, who finished the play at the rim with two points.
“That was a pretty good pass I'd say,” Timm said, smiling. “I was pretty proud of that one.”
AHS added five free throws down the stretch, closing out the conference quarterfinal win. Timm scored 10 points as did Nielsen, who played through the end of the game despite tallying her fourth foul with more than 6 minutes remaining.
“I just tried to make sure I was straight up with feet planted,” the sophomore said when asked how she kept herself eligible.
Wolf added nine Eagle points, while Arp had eight and Hegemann scored four. Callee Shearer made a 3, too, and Austyn Flesner scored two points.
Arlington next plays 6 p.m. today at Yutan in the NCC Tournament semifinals. The Chieftains topped coach Brenn's team 47-27 last month.
“Early in the season, we got beat out by Yutan,” Timm said. “And, I think, we just really want to get back at them. We really want to come out again and see what we can do against them.”
The conference championship and third-place games are scheduled for Saturday.
