The Blair and Arlington track and field teams opened their seasons in the same place on different days.
The Bears competed in Concordia University's Bulldog Challenge Sandhill Division on Thursday before the Eagles took to the indoor Seward track Friday for Forest Division competition. BHS claimed eight event wins overall, while AHS did the same less than 24 hours later.
Next, AHS is scheduled to host both Blair and Fremont this afternoon. The triangular meet is set for a 4:15 p.m. start.

Bears claim two 2nds
Coach Bryan Soukup's Bears finished second in both the boys and girls team standings Thursday. The boys were second to Columbus Lakeview in the Sandhill Division, 79.5-79, while the girls trailed only Seward, 75-73.
Ethan Baessler, Nolan Slominski and Ethan Belsky notched the BHS boys' individual event wins. Baessler, making his high school track debut after playing baseball a year ago, won the 60-meter dash in a meet-record 7.01 seconds, while Slominski earned the 800 run victory in 2:05.46.
Belsky bested his opposition in the high jump, too. He cleared a bar set at 6 feet, 2 inches.
In addition, Zac Keeling, Ted Lueders, Calin O'Grady and Slominski combined for the Blair boys' victory in the 3,200 relay. The team stopped the clock in 8:48.01.
On the girls' side, the Bears' Makayla Baughman and Erika Roehrs won individual events. Baughman won the 400-meter dash in 1:03.28, while Roehrs bested the long jump field with a 16-1.5 attempt.
Two female BHS relays took first, too. Hailey Amandus, Reece Ewoldt, Audie Keeling and Baughman won the 1,600 event in 4:21.59.
The 3,200 relay team of Kaitlynn Amandus, Jade Wickwire, Sophia Baedke and Hailey Amandus, meanwhile, won their race in 10:55.01.
Blair's Baessler (200 dash), Dawson Fricke (3,200 run), Ben Holcomb (triple jump) and Sam Cemer (pole vault) added second-place finishes, too, during the Bears' first meet of the season.

The Arlington girls won the Bulldog Challenge's Forest Division on Friday with seven of their team's eight event wins.

Eagles senior Kailynn Gubbels, meanwhile, won the high jump with a meet record, 5-6 attempt. She stopped the clock in a record-breaking time during the 60-meter hurdles finals, too, but was edged out by Lincoln Lutheran's Adrianna Rodencal, who ran it even faster — 8.99 seconds to 9.13.
Taylor Arp added a first-place discus finish with a throw covering 114-10. Cadie Robinson's 32-7.5 effort in the shot put was good for an event win, too.
Arlington's 1,600-meter relay lineup — Chase Andersen, Gubbels, Whitney Wollberg and Green — won their race in 4:31.61 as well.
While the girls won the division title with 86 points to Milford's 52, the AHS boys were third with 45 behind first-place Milford (65) and runner-up Yutan (54).
