Arlington seniors race at home for final time

FCHS boys take 2nd, Eagle girls 3rd at track meet

With the season winding down, Arlington High School seniors experienced their final home track and field meet Thursday evening.
The Eagles secured third in the girls' team standings with five event wins, while the boys earned seventh with one. Fort Calhoun, however, won five events overall, claiming second on the boys' side and fourth on the girls' as it, too, prepares for district competition.
Incidentally, Stokely Lewis and Hannah Goodwater were among the AHS 12th-graders experiencing a first during their last home meets. Both were on their respective squads' 400-meter relay teams.
“First race since eighth grade,” said Lewis, who'd only participated in field events during his two seasons as a high school track athlete. “It was pretty fun. I want to do it again.”
Goodwater, meanwhile, has four years of track experience, but none on the sprinters' relay squad.
“It was really scary getting out of those blocks. I almost jumped straight out of them,” she said. “But it was really fun and, even though we didn't place, we still did really good.”
For both Eagles, it was a unique and enjoyable event for one last night around their home track. Lewis said he quite enjoyed the cheers as he finished up his leg of the race.
“We always seem to do better when we're at home,” Goodwater added. “We always seem to jump better. Throw further. Vault higher. Run faster.”
No team ran faster than Arlington in the girls' 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Seniors Whitney Wollberg, Kelise Krivohlavek and Hailey O'Daniel won those races alongside freshman Corinne May, while O'Daniel also won the individual 1,600 in 5:25.26.
Sophomore Hayley Arp finished first in the shot put and discus, too, while senior Dallin Franzluebbers won the 400-meter dash for the Eagles in 50.67 seconds.
Fort Calhoun, meanwhile, won three races and two field events on its trip across Washington County to Arlington. Seth Waters was first in the 800 run, while Matthew Kelly and Raeann Massey won the 300 hurdles and 3,200 run, respectively.
The Pioneers' Kaylee Taylor added a triple jump victory with a 35-foot effort, while Afton Byelick bested second- and third-place Eagles — Wollberg and Rylie Kyloo — in the pole vault with a 10-6 showing.
FCHS next competes today during the 11 a.m. Class B District 3 Meet in Blair, while AHS contends for its own state qualifications at the C-2 Meet in Oakland on Thursday. It starts at 11 a.m., too.
