Dustin Kirk scored a game-high 21 points Thursday as the Arlington boys basketball team opened its season with a 54-40 win at West Point-Beemer.
The Eagles hosted and lost to Ashland-Greenland on Saturday, 57-35, but they jumped out fast and started the year with a 14-point road victory against the Cadets. Coach Tyler Spitser's squad hit four first-period 3-pointers and led 20-4 after just 8 minutes of the new season.
Kirk scored 21 points for the game, notching 12 from behind the arc and five from the foul line. The senior notched eight points before the end of the first quarter.
Logan Kaup, meanwhile, scored 13 points with three long-range makes for the Eagles. Colby Grefe added eight points and Nick Smith had seven with two more 3-pointers.
Arlington had less success offensively against the Class C1 No. 2 Ashland Bluejays, though. Kirk scored nine points in defeat, while both Barrett Nielsen and Kaup notched seven apiece.
The Bluejays, however, had three players score in double figures. Max Parker led his 1-0 squad with 14 against the Eagles.
“We are going to put a lot of stress on closeouts defensively, and we have to be more aggressive attacking the paint on offense,” Spitser said in response to a question about practice focus.
AHS next plays Yutan tonight at 7:30. The Eagles will again be the home team.
