FCHS closes tourney with consolation win, too

A Nebraska Capitol Conference Boys Basketball Tournament that started with Arlington against Fort Calhoun ended Saturday with the Eagles in a third-place game against Syracuse.
While the Pioneers closed out their tourney two days earlier with a win against Conestoga, the Eagles finished third with a 62-50 victory at Logan View High School. Coach Jake Polk pulled his starters from the floor to cheers with 26 seconds left as Oliver Ladehoff scored the final points from the foul line.
The 6-foot junior led AHS (10-7 overall) with 21 points against the Rockets (11-6), who are 0-2 against Polk's team this season. Ladehoff knocked down two 3-pointers during the 15-13 first period, including one wide-open attempt from the right corner at 13-9.
The Eagles' Schuyler Logemann made his own 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down at 21-14 before substitute Jack Rosenbalm added his own long-range make at 29-19.
Ahead 29-22 at the halftime break, Arlington led the entire second half, too. Syracuse cut the Eagles' lead to three points during the third quarter, but the third-place squad responded with a 23-point fourth to close out the win.
In addition to Ladehoff's 21, senior Trent Koger scored 18 points for AHS. Logemann had 15, too.
The Eagles were forced into the third-place game with a 53-48 loss at top-seeded Yutan on Thursday. The game with the Class C2 No. 8 Chieftains was tied late, but the Eagles couldn't quite finish ahead.
Ladehoff finished with a team-best 13 points. He had six during the second period as Coach Polk's team turned a 10-7 first-quarter deficit into a 27-24 halftime lead.
Altogether, the Eagles made five 3-pointers during the 20-point second. Ladehoff had one, but Owen Ladehoff, Logemann, Killian McIntosh and Koger added one apiece, too.
Yutan retook the lead during the third period, but Arlington battled back in the fourth before the Chieftains avoided the NCC semifinals upset and improved to 12-3 overall.
Next, the Eagles play at Fort Calhoun today at 7:30 p.m.

Calhoun wins consolation game
The Pioneers rebounded from their first-round NCC loss to AHS with a 49-40 consolation victory Thursday against Conestoga.
“Thought we looked a little tired, but I was extremely proud of our kids bouncing back and finding a way,” coach TJ O'Connor stated. “They willed themselves to get it done. Complete credit to them.”
Kade Foy and Blake Welchert combined for 30 points during the home win, knocking down eight free throws combined. Foy's 17-point effort was aided by two 3-point makes, while Welchert scored six of his 13 points during the all-important fourth period.
FCHS built a 27-17 halftime lead, but held just a 37-34 lead going into the final quarter.
Trevor Tesarek, meanwhile, led the Cougars with 16 points in defeat. The Pioneers held him to a single 3-point make during the fourth period.
