Eagles go 1-1 on tourney run

The Arlington baseball team edged Douglas County West on Friday, earning a championship game berth during their home tournament — an unofficial, five-team Nebraska Capitol Conference event.
“I think we're pretty pumped about it,” sophomore Blaine Vogt said.
The Platte Valley Patriots were, too, however, earning a 10-0 victory Saturday in just five innings. They improved to 11-5 with the tourney win, while the Eagles dropped to 6-9 overall.
Platte Valley started fast against AHS starter Jack Bang, plating four runs during the first inning. One RBI knock zipped right past the pitcher's glove and head, finding the outfield grass at the Washington County Fairgrounds.
The Eagles finally ended the first frame when second baseman Logan Kaup snared a hard liner out of the air for the third out.
After a 1-2-3 top of the second inning for coach Tyler Stender's team, the Patriots added two more runs during the bottom half. Trevor Denker eventually stepped onto the mound for AHS and ended the inning with a one-pitch induced pop out.
Braden Monke singled in the third inning and Nick Smith doubled in the fourth, but the Eagles were unable to plate a run one day after scoring 11.

AHS beats Falcons
Arlington started its home tourney Friday, and earned its championship game appearance by 11-7 win over Douglas County West. The Eagles outhit the Falcons 12-6.
Vogt said his team needed to see a few pitches to get going, but responded to those early offerings accordingly.
“We changed our approach really well,” he noted. “I think that helped us drive the ball right side to see what we could do with it.”
Denker hit a first inning RBI double for the Eagles, but the home team seized control with its five-run third. Bang started the high-scoring frame with a single to right field before courtesy runner Weston Wollberg and Denker joined him on the bags.
Smith gave Arlington a 2-1 advantage with a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk before Vogt pushed across two more runs with a hit through the infield. Dalton Newcomer then hit the ball into a DC West error, scoring two more for a 6-1 lead.
Later, trailing by six runs, the Falcons scored five during the top half of the fifth inning to pull within 7-6. The Eagles, Vogt said, were unfazed.
“We had the mentality to come back and score a few runs,” he said. “Get back into it.”
AHS did with Killian McIntosh scoring on an error, Kaden Pittman plating Kolby Tighe and Smith hitting a two-RBI double.
DC West scored once more, but the Eagles earned the four-run victory to advance. Smith won on the mound and plated four runs, while Pittman notched three hits.
AHS next plays 4:30 p.m. today against Fort Calhoun. The Eagles won the season's first matchup 10-5.
