The Class C No. 7 Arlington High School softball team opened its season Saturday in Wayne, finishing second to the host Blue Devils in the tournament's championship game.
The Eagles earned their spot in the finals with wins against Pierce and Highway 91 before a 6-1 loss ended their day. Wayne pitcher Kendall Dorey held coach Janelle Lorsch's team without a hit in the six-inning finale, though one Julia Landauer plate appearance did result in a run as she drew a bases-loaded walk.
AHS started its 2021 season with an 8-0 win over Pierce in the opener. Senior pitcher Hailey Brenn earned the win, striking out 11 Bluejays in six innings. Kiersten Taylor and Gracie Herman hit homers, while Hannah Stahlecker, Cadie Robinson and Landauer notched two hits apiece.
Then, in the semifinals, the Eagles bested Highway 91, 8-5, moving into the title game tilt. Stahlecker was 3-for-3 with two homers and five RBIs, pushing her total to six RBIs for the day. Rylee Fuehrer earned the pitching win.
“We are pleased with our start to the season, and we found some areas we are going to strive to improve,” AHS coach Janelle Lorsch said. “Overall, these were great team wins and I am extremely proud of how hard the girls worked today.”
Arlington next plays tonight against Logan View/Scribner-Snyder. The home game starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Two Rivers Sports Complex.
