Andersen, Wollberg, Green and Gubbels combine for mark

Before the season began, Arlington track and field record-breaker Kailynn Gubbels pointed to her school's 36-year-old 1,600-meter relay mark as a senior year goal.
On Thursday, Chase Andersen, Whitney Wollberg, Keelianne Green and she broke the 1986 record of Shelli Graver, Anne Gnuse, Dawn Schafersman and Karoline Maaske at Platteview High School. The Eagles won the final girls race of the meet in 4:07.74, besting 4:07.9 and helping their team to a third-place finish during the Trojans' invite. Coach Steven Gubbels' team scored 91 points, 30 behind their first-place hosts.
The AHS boys, meanwhile, were fifth with 54 points — 65 less than the top squad, Platteview.
Overall, the Eagles notched seven event wins. In addition to the 1,600 relay, Gubbels also won the 100 hurdles in 15.11 seconds and the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches.
Green, another new record-holder, won the long jump. The junior cleared 18-6.25, while Hailey O'Daniel won the individual 800-meter run in 2:32.69.
Grefe was a member of Arlington's first-place 3,200 relay team before claiming the boys' 800 in 2:06.7. He joined Nolan May, Kevin Flesner and Dallin Franzluebbers to clock in at 8:38.93 in his first race — and first win — of the day.
Barrett Nielsen (300 hurdles), Andersen (400 dash) and Taylor Arp (discus) added second-place finishes for coach Gubbels' team, too. The Eagles next compete 2 p.m. today at Columbus Lakeview.
